Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life

Description

Henri Nouwen understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community and relationships. And the practice of discernment is about how to read the 'signs of the times' in daily life in order to know what to do next. Nouwen believes our calling and mission may be made clear through the people we meet on our path, the circumstances that each day brings, the books and sacred texts we read and meditate on, and through current events. Discernment seeks the will of God, requiring the disciplines of contemplative prayer, compassionate action and theological reflection. Discernment has been compiled by two of Nouwen's longtime students, Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird, from coursework, journals and unpublished writings.

One boy, one boat, one tiger...After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild, blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan - and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and best-loved works of fiction in recent years. "Inspiring people to care about the planet." In the new edition of LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, authors Tyler Miller and Scott Spoolman have partnered with the National Geographic Society to develop a text designed to equip students with the inspiration and knowledge they need to make a difference solving today's environmental issues. Exclusive content highlights important work of National Geographic Explorers, and features over 200 new photos, Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life free download pdf maps, and illustrations that bring course concepts to life. Using sustainability as the integrating theme, LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT 18e, provides clear introductions to the multiple environmental problems that we face and balanced discussions to evaluate potential solutions. In addition to the integration of new and engaging National Geographic content, every chapter has been thoroughly updated and 18 new Core Case Studies offer current examples of present environmental problems and scenarios for potential solutions. The concept-centered approach used in the text transforms complex environmental topics and issues into key concepts that students will understand and remember.
